As Ukraine was being overtaken by Russia, Ukrainians were immigrating by the thousands to the US. Ukrainians moving to the new world were leaving behind a disappearing culture and moving to a completely different land. Immigrants were proud of their heritage, and many of the traditions that were started in America exist to preserve this heritage and to pass it on to future generations. The Ukrainian Boy Scouting program is one such tradition. Ukrainians in America started this program in the early 1900's to train their young to return to Ukraine and drive the Russians out. This began as resistance to Russian rule over Ukraine. All boys and girls participate in this intermittently throughout the year, starting at age seven and continuing for life. Ukrainian Boy Scouts is very different from the typical American view of Boy Scouts, in that it involves a more rigorous wilderness-training program. This is because the program was essentially started as a military training program, and although it exists now only for fun and tradition, many of the subjects and ideas taught to the youths remain the same. People who are involved in the program put their children through it, as an attempt to preserve Ukrainian culture. When Ukrainians turn eighteen they become counselors, and at age thirty-five they become seniors and run the program. This program, along with a handful of similar programs, was started for various reasons. To begin with, Ukrainian youths had trouble adjusting to American society. ?They (Ukrainian youth programs) are helping to solve some of the social problems of the ?second generation' that does not seem to be able to find its way into American society or does not feel at home there.? Ukrainian youths were out of place in America with no sense of identity, and these programs made the adjustment less difficult. I am not sure that I would label it anger, but I feel a sense of injustice rise up inside me. I understand what the artist was trying to portray in this painting but I also know how I interpret this painting. In my interpretation I want to fight for the dignity of this woman who is treated with obvious disrespect based on the condition of Visual Arts 4 the room in which she lies while a village in a valley appears prosperous. And yet I feel an animosity toward the people who do not recognize the contribution that she made to their society or the number of lives that were probably spared. I feel the history of this story and the artist’s emotions. I feel that the woman in the bed carries a huge load on her shoulders. You can almost feel her despair and have to wonder what heart ache she carries within. Does this prosperous village in the valley sit ignorant of the sacrifices of this fearless woman? This woman instills hope and compassion and a sense of empowerment. It’s like being on an emotional rollercoaster yet the lines of this painting is also like a rollercoaster. The round mountain peaks, the curving roads and the rolling sheets over the woman. The curvy scrolls of the wrought iron bed all encompass this feeling of being on a rollercoaster. Formal Design This painting has been labeled as Surrealism. Surrealism was supposedly born from the Dada Movement. This â€Å"Dada Movement† was a banding together of artists who sought refuge from World War I in Europe. As they banded together they became like our early day protestors. Their art, poetry and music reflected their anti-war cries. After the war people wanted to get away from the intensity of darkness that so many paintings depicted and they wanted something to help them escape the everyday reality. So Surrealism became a way for them to combine dreams and fantasy with some reality. The Principles for all design are Unity, Balance, Dominance, Repetition, Rhythm, Contrast and Theme. There is a unity between the woman living in poverty and the prosperous village. Can there be prosperity without poverty? Or can there be poverty without prosperity? If the prosperous mountain were removed all this art would speak about is poverty. La Malinche would appear as a poor woman on a bed. If La Malinche was removed from the painting you would just have a prosperous village living in a valley. A beautiful fairytale painting. Because the elements of this painting need each other and have unity, this painting has balance. The mountain on La Malinche’s hip gives this painting symmetry. It becomes almost the fulcrum of the painting. Everything balances around the central part of this painting. The mountain, the prosperity takes a dominant position in this painting which could suggest her success in rising above adversity. The rhythm in this painting would be the flow of the village across the sheets, and the flow of the sheets across the woman. There is this continuous theme flowing out from the village. The poverty, the dark room and the woman contrast with the light of the village and it’s prosperity. Each of these principals come together to form the theme of poverty and prosperity. Lightness and Dark. Realism and Surrealism. Technical Properties The Dream of La Malinche is painted on canvas with oils. If skill is truly based on the artists portrayal of his picture, than Ruiz has truly surpassed all other artists in portraying the history and story of this heroic figure. He has an incredible sense of color. And this painting reflects his own personal view on this historical figure. The lightening bolt (or crack in the wall as I call it) has depth to it. This painting does not have the usual bulkiness that you so often see in oil paintings. As an artist Antonio Ruiz is known for his draftsmanship skills. The Mass-marketing of Working Class Culture The fads of the father are visited on the son: we've all seen how adult fads are given down to children. We've seen how cargo pants have trickled down, thanks to the Gap, Baby Gap, and Old Navy (all corporations owned by The Limited, Inc.). Cargo pants have always been a mystery to me. The attractive thing about them is storage (which I'll get to later), blandness and personal appearance. I only considered wearing cargo pants because they'd hide how chunky my thighs are. And they're beige and boring--they thus go with anything. I also don't understand this fascination with looking working-class (In a recent copy of Vogue, there were ritzy, high-priced versions of lumberjack clothing). There's absolutely nothing wrong with that and I don't want to sound like an elitist, because I'm by no means not working-class. I just wonder why this a trend, why white collar workers want to look like they work with their hands. But this fascination with storage, with having so many products presents a problem. Cargo pants were designed so workers could essentially wear their toolbox. Today's kids wearing cargo pants don't need that space for hammers and nails. To avoid acknowledging that cargo pants are a silly trend, wearers unconsciously seek to fill their pockets. As Lacan might say, empty pockets remind us of our lacks. Cargo pants only encourage the reckless. The Gap, like any other capitalist corporation, wants consumers to spend oodles of money. Providing more storage space in a pair of pants allows for children and teens to spend even more money filling them. What the Gap has done is transformed the meaning of cargo pants. It is a redefinition: today's cargo pants wearers aren't laborers, they're spenders. Isn't that a glorious thing, the Gap may ask us. It's a way of showing how the upper class has always stepped all over the lower class, taking what aspects of its culture it likes and discarding the individuals involved. We've seen this over and over, but it usually has been a race's culture that has been used while the individuals are considered meaningless by the ruling classes. This is happening again today with Latin culture. White culture takes what few things it likes (namely Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin, maybe a salsa beat, and some Tex-Mex food), and celebrates it as all Latin culture has to offer, ignoring debates about the "Latinness" of such aspects anyway.

My home country Korea has a reputation for its intense education system. When I was in high school, I used to go to school at 7am, finish class at 4pm, and have self-study time in school until 10pm. The main reason I needed to study that long was because of math and especially Calculus. Calculus took more than half of the math course and therefore was a crucial subject. Experiencing Korean Calculus course is not an experience most students here in Miami can have, so I would like to introduce what is what like, how it was different from MTH 151, and what I learned through the experience. First, to give a brief explanation about Korean Calculus, the material I learned was mostly the same to that of MTH 151, starting from limits to anti derivatives. However, Korean Calculus has more challenging problems than just calculations. Calculation problems are used to get a grip of the mathematical concepts, but the real problems are integrated questions. These are math questions that have mixtures of different math concepts, such as derivatives combined with matrix. In addition to the basic concepts, teachers teach advanced equations outside of textbooks that are useful when solving integrated problems and tips on solving specific hard questions that come up frequently in tests. A year before his birth, his older brother was born and died; his name was also Vincent Van Gogh. Anna Cornelia Carbentus, the mother never got over her first child’s death despite having other children. This made Van Gogh somber. Despite this Van Gogh was very close to his young brother Theo. As a little boy, Van Gogh was inspired by his mother to love nature, draw and paint with watercolors. At age 15, Van Gogh was well educated and knew fluent English, German, French and native Dutch. At a young age and perhaps at a time when I was most impressionable, I was flipping through the channels one day after school when I stumbled across a commercial that changed my life. This commercial was a viewing glass into another world which up until that day, I did not know existed. From that day on it became a routine. Every day after school at 4, I learned about the horrors of famine, drought, sickness, suffering and death from the comfort of my living room. At first I was deeply saddened by the images of suffering children with bellies swollen from disease and malnourishment. Then came confusion, and even anger. How could the people in charge of the world let this happen? I showered my parents with questions as to why something this horrific had taken place. The commercial, which depicted young infants scantly clothed and covered in dirt and flies, shattered my understanding of a universally good world. It was the same sati sfaction derived from helping people that has motivated me to attend church-based volunteer work camps for the past three summers. These sleep away camps, which brought me to very poor neighborhoods, children’s homes and other nonprofit organizations, have been an outlet for my compassion. Over the years, this compassion for people has evolved into a sense of duty to serve others. This sense of obligation to serve and even lead, drove me to run for the office of Senior Class President. As the president of my senior class, my job would have little value if I did not feel that I was giving a part of myself back to the world which has been so generous to me. Now at 17 years old, as I reflect on the day when I came across Feed the Children on channel 54, I realize the importance of having my naive sense of the world shattered. By experiencing the sadness, wonder and anger, I was able to discover my compassion. In the very same way that a commercial transformed an eleven year old boy for the better, I look forward to being transformed again in January 2012, when my family and I travel to Ghana, Africa to do volunteer work at an orphanage. I hope that I am devastated. I hope that my understanding of the world is destroyed and in its ashes a new one is born so that I can come one step closer to discovering the limits of human compassion, like I did six years ago.

Analysis As mentioned earlier, OMEGA is planning to import refined products from various mega-refineries operating in Singapore. OMEGA has leased tank farms in Townsville, Mackey and Bundaberg. This section of the report mentions some of the logistics challenges of importing fuel from Singapore in Australia (Coyle, 2016). The transportation activities in Australia can be defined in different categories as mentioned below. Roads The roads in Australia can be divided into federal highways, state highways and local roads. The road freight industry in Australia generates close to 50 billion dollars in revenue and has more than 40000 operators. These operators range from single-truck operators to large corporations listed in ASX. One of the logistics challenges for OMEGA is to setup an effective contract with one or more of these operators to move the fuel from the ports to the fuel tanks. The identification and choice for the road operators for OMEGA is a challenge to be completed through effective analysis of the performance, trustworthiness and business model of the operators (Waters, 2014). The road freight transport industry in Australia also provides a wide range of innovative solutions and emerging technologies for the transportation of the products. OMEGA can analyze these facilities provided by the road freight operators to determine the most efficient way to transport the refined products from the port s to the fuel tanks. This is one of the important logistics challenges of OMEGA importing the products from Singapore (Ghaderi, 2015). Such a trend of the PPI for the road freight transport industry suggests that the costs of transporting by road has been increasing. On the other hand, the movement of these costs have been flat since 2014, which in turn suggests a possible benefit from the decreasing fuel price and slower average wage growth (Figure 1, 2016). The decision of transporting the imported products from the ports to the fuel tanks will be a logistics challenge, which OMEGA has to overcome to be able to determine and utilize either the rail or road freight transport industry (Kinnear, 2015). Rail The rail transport industry is responsible for the generation of close to 8 billion dollars of revenue and consists of more than 25 operators. The logistics challenge for OMEGA is to decide whether to utilize the rail industry to move the fuel products from the ports to the fuel tanks and the choice of the operator among the available operators in the corresponding industry (Ghaderi, 2013). The figure below shows the location of the ports across the county (Brooks, 2012). Most of these ports are facing congestion issues due to the heavy dependency of most of the import and export activities of the country on the port industry. The federal and state governments have been actively working on the design and implementation of efficient port strategies in order to utilize them more effectively. The identification of the most effective shipping operator is another logistics challenge in importing refined products from Singapore. The shipping transport industry in the sea contains both foreign and domestic operators in which the domestic operators generate more than 4 billion dollars of revenue (Figure 4, 2016). The federal and state governments are also working to increase the fleet size of the country in the sea freight industry in order to provide more opportunities for the import and export activities of the organizations. Recent analysis proves that the presence of the vessels in the sea fright transportation industry is good enough to support the import activates of OMEGA (Bell, 2014). Australian biosecurity requirements The Australian Government Department of Agriculture and Water Resources includes the operation of Biosecurity Australia, which is responsible for the definition of the policies on the importation of various quarantine risk materials into the country. The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) is in turn responsible for implementing these policies for the importation of materials into Australia. The importation of the refined products from Singapore by OMEGA will fall under these requirements and would need to satisfy these requirements to be able to import the products. All the vessels coming into Australia from overseas are subjected to these biosecurity requirements implemented by AQIS to be safe inside the country. The products to be imported by OMEGA should also be compliant to the international health regulations to ensure getting a permission to use the corresponding products in the Australian markets. This is one of the most significant challenges of OMEGA for imp orting the refined products from Singapore to ensure that the importation of the products from Singapore comply with the different regulations and policies implemented by the federal government of Australia. The Biosecurity Act 2015 is the regulation in place currently in Australia to ensure that the imported products from overseas are safe to be used in the Australian markets (Nelson, 2014). Recommendations This section of the report mentions a number of recommendations for the importation of the products from the Singaporean mega-refineries by OMEGA. OMEGA should focus on the effective analysis of the operators available in the sea freight industry in order to choose the best possible operator for the transportation of the refined products from the Singaporean mega-refineries to the Australian ports. The management of the organization should locate the ports closest to the fuel tanks present in Townsville, Mackey and Bundaberg in order to minimize the inland transportation costs (Pateman, 2016). The management of the organization should efficiently analyze the costs and performance of both the rail and road freight transport industry in Australia to determine the best decision for the inland transportation system to be used for the transportation of the fuel products from the ports to the fuel tanks. The management of the organization should put a lot of focus on the analysis of all the major freight transportation routes in the country covered by both the rail and road transportation system in order to minimize the corresponding costs of transportation. The importation operations of OMEGA should be effectively designed to be compliant to the Australia biosecurity requirements mentioned in the corresponding legislations as the non-compliance to these requirements may cause major disciplinary or legal actions against the organization (Hausman, 2013). But later, this practicality (which distinguished me amongst a sea of infants) loses significance because the name begins to hold deeper meanings as one matures. It may even mark individual identities to the point where a mere mention can lead to surmises, fair and unfair. As a result, one can say Benedict Arnold and Traitor easily in the same breath. A name is not a mere utterance by the tongue; because it is categorized (most often by gender and culture), it can forcefully project its own characteristics onto its owner's identity. Often, my fifth grade teacher crabbily speculated that her mother was probably drunk when her mother was pregnant. My teacher's name was Billy, and her brother's name was Sue, not vice versa. Recognizable connotations in names are important tools for authors to convey literary meanings. For instance, Joe Christmas in William Faulkner's Light in August is conspicuous because of his mixed heritage, which is projected by his parchmentcolored skin and his name, which a normal white man does not have. His striking name makes him unique, marking him as a foreigner. However, he chooses not to replace it with his white foster father's name because the name Christmas identifies him and his mixed heritage. Like Christmas, some people choose names that are significant to their identities. But in my case, my elementary schoolmates took the initiative to choose my nicknames: Infinity Eyeballs and Moron. Needless to say, the former was a reference to my glasses, and the latter was a corruption of Mi Ran. I was stung because they were relevant to my identity; I did wear glasses, and my ethnic name can be mispronounced easily by non-Korean tongues. Thus, I became ashamed of my glasses and nationality. Adults seemed even less adept at pronouncing my name, so I began to dread substitute teachers, especially when they took attendance. Some were brave and tried to pronounce my name, but many just sighed, Sorry, I can't read this name. It is also ironic that my fifth grade teacher thought my name was Mia Ron. My given name became a burden, a source of torment. I was bothered that only Koreans could pronounce my name correctly. After one difficult day at school, I screamed at my father, Why didn't you name me Ann? I love that name because it isn't Korean! With hurt in his eyes, he responded that he named me after the orchid because he admired its wild, singular beauty. But, he softened, When you were a baby, your red, newborn face did not epitomize the orchid. Later, however, he did decide that my name was apt because I require as much love and care as an orchid. For a while, I considered compromising by Westernizing Mi Ran to Marion, but that would be no compromise. It symbolizes shedding some of my Korean culture, a part of my identity. Then, I learned to accept my unique name as a gift. As American culture blended into my identity, I learned to accept how non-Koreans try to pronounce my name. In fact, I began to like being called a variety of names that do belong to me, such as Mirm, Mirin, Mir-Ahn, and not just Mi Ran everyday. When I chose to keep my given name, I retained an aspect of my Korean culture and gained an American one. But most importantly, the mispronunciations actually give me a sense of individuality.
